The city of Elmhurst is grieving the loss of James “Jimmy” Gracey, a 20-year-old student at the University of Alabama who died earlier this month while visiting Barcelona during spring break.
Officials believe Gracey’s death was an accidental drowning, a tragedy that has deeply affected both his hometown and his university community. Funeral services were held at Visitation Catholic Church, where loved ones gathered to celebrate his life and support his family.
Gracey, who graduated from Saint Ignatius College Prep, was remembered as a kind and energetic young man with strong family values. He is survived by his parents and four younger siblings, with whom he shared a close bond.
Community members say the loss has been especially difficult given his age and the circumstances surrounding his passing. Situations like this have also renewed conversations about travel safety for students abroad, particularly during busy holiday periods.
As tributes continue, those who knew Jimmy are honoring his memory through shared stories, prayer services, and the support of a tight-knit community coming together in grief.
