MADISON — The Wisconsin Badgers football program is grieving the loss of former tight end Jack Pugh, a player remembered not only for his athletic promise but for his openness about personal challenges.
Pugh joined Wisconsin as part of the 2021 recruiting class after a late but impressive transition into football. Having initially focused on basketball in high school in Columbus, Ohio, he quickly rose through the ranks and attracted scholarship offers from several major programs, including University of Michigan football and Penn State football.
His time with the Badgers, however, extended beyond the field. Pugh stepped away from the team during the 2023 season before later announcing his retirement, citing ongoing struggles with mental health. In a deeply personal message shared publicly at the time, he revealed his battle with depression and substance use, emphasizing his decision to focus on healing and building a more stable life.
The university confirmed his passing on March 31, describing him as a compassionate and uplifting presence within the team. Teammates and coaches have since shared tributes, many highlighting his character and willingness to support others.
“He always brought energy and genuinely cared about people,” one former teammate noted, reflecting the widespread admiration for Pugh’s personality.
Pugh went on to complete his degree at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 2025, an achievement that underscores his determination beyond athletics.
His story adds to the ongoing conversation around mental health in college sports. Organizations like the NCAA have made strides in promoting athlete well-being, yet Pugh’s experience highlights the continued need for awareness, support, and open dialogue.
As tributes continue, many see his legacy as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing mental health—and the courage it takes to speak openly about it.
