Eric Dane, Beloved ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Actor, Dies at 53 Following ALS Diagnosis

The television industry is mourning Eric Dane, the actor whose portrayal of Dr. Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy made him one of the most recognizable faces in modern medical drama. Dane died at 53 after living with motor neurone disease (ALS).

Introduced in 2006, Mark Sloan quickly evolved from a brief guest appearance into a central character. Opposite Patrick Dempsey’s Derek Shepherd, Dane’s confident, flirtatious surgeon earned the nickname “McSteamy,” helping drive the show’s global popularity during its peak years.

Industry observers note that Dane’s success reflected a broader shift in television toward complex, morally flawed characters. His storyline—particularly the emotional arc with Lexie Grey, played by Chyler Leigh—remains among the series’ most discussed moments.

Beyond Grey’s Anatomy, Dane demonstrated range with leading roles in The Last Ship and HBO’s Euphoria, where he portrayed the troubled patriarch Cal Jacobs. Colleagues frequently described him as disciplined, collaborative and quietly generous with younger cast members.

Dane revealed his ALS diagnosis last year, bringing renewed attention to the progressive neurological disease. Medical advocates say high-profile cases often help accelerate public awareness and research interest.

He is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters. Fans worldwide continue to share tributes, many noting that Dane’s portrayal of Mark Sloan helped define an era of primetime television.
