Manchester, NH – The Manchester School District is continuing to support students and staff following the death of longtime educator Abby Gemme, a widely respected member of the Central High School community in Manchester.
District leaders announced Gemme’s passing in a message to families, describing her as a compassionate teacher who spent more than 20 years helping students build both academic confidence and personal resilience. Since joining Central High in 2002, she became deeply embedded in school life, serving as Senior Class Advisor, track coach, Unified Basketball coach and yearbook advisor.
School officials emphasized that Gemme consistently went beyond classroom instruction, attending student events and mentoring young people across grade levels. Her broad involvement, they noted, made her loss especially significant for the Central community.

Former students have echoed that sentiment online. Many describe Gemme as a teacher who remembered her graduates and celebrated their milestones long after they left high school. One alumna wrote that Gemme “always made students feel seen,” a reflection repeated across numerous tributes.
In response to the loss, the district has scheduled counseling sessions for students and staff in partnership with the Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester. Education specialists say such support is critical when a school loses a long-serving educator, as grief can affect both academic focus and emotional well-being.
Funeral details are expected in the coming days.
Meanwhile, colleagues say Gemme’s influence will live on through the generations of students she encouraged and supported throughout her career.
