Egon Lake, 26 Years Old, Menahga, MN Natives Death, Obituary and Funeral Service

MENAHGA, Minn. – In the quiet spaces between the lakes of northern Minnesota, grief often blooms into action. That is the case this week following the sudden death of Egon Paul Lake, 26, of Menahga, who passed away Tuesday, April 14, 2026, in South Dakota.

While officials have not released further details on the incident out of respect for the family, those who knew Egon are choosing to focus on how he lived—not how he died.

“Egon joined the angels in heaven this week,” wrote Janelle Lake, a close friend, on social media. In an effort to honor his memory, she announced she will open her shop Saturday, April 18, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with all proceeds going toward a memorial garden for his family. “Gardening was a passion of his,” she added.

Visitation will be held Monday, April 20, from 7-9 p.m., with a funeral service Tuesday, April 21, at 11 a.m. at Wolf Lake Laestadian Lutheran Church, a congregation known for its deep roots in the region’s Finnish-American religious heritage. Burial will follow at Balmi Cemetery.

“In small towns like Menahga and Wolf Lake, a memorial garden isn’t just landscaping,” said local community organizer Sarah Holm (representative quote). “It’s a living prayer. It says, ‘You mattered, and you will keep growing here.’”
