Authorities in Virginia are investigating the deaths of former lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax and his wife, Cerina Fairfax, in what police have described as an apparent murder-suicide at their home in Annandale.
According to officials, Fairfax allegedly shot his wife before turning the weapon on himself. The couple’s two teenage children were inside the house at the time, a detail that has intensified the emotional weight of the case. Police say they responded to an emergency call from one of the children shortly after midnight.
Fairfax, who served as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022, was a prominent political figure and the second Black individual elected to statewide office in the state. His career, however, was marked by controversy, including sexual assault allegations he consistently denied.
During a press briefing, county police chief Kevin Davis indicated that the incident may have been linked to ongoing marital difficulties.
