Breaking: Convicted Killer Jarvis Butts Dies in Michigan Prison, Investigation Underway

Jarvis Butts, recently convicted in the killing of 13-year-old Na’Ziyah Harris and multiple child sexual assault cases, has died while in custody in Michigan. Authorities say his death, which occurred at a state correctional intake facility, is being treated as a suspected suicide pending further investigation.

The Michigan Department of Corrections confirmed that staff attempted emergency life-saving efforts, but Butts could not be revived. The Michigan State Police is now reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Butts, 43, had been sentenced just two weeks earlier to 35 to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in Harris’s death. He also received multiple additional sentences for sexually abusing several young girls.

Harris was reported missing in Detroit in early 2024 after being last seen leaving a bus. Prosecutors later revealed that Butts had been in communication with her and allegedly engaged in grooming behavior prior to her disappearance.

The case shocked the community, particularly after it emerged that Harris was pregnant at the time of her death. As part of his plea agreement, Butts was required to provide information about the location of her remains, which had not yet been recovered.

Experts note that deaths in custody can raise concerns about inmate supervision and mental health support, while also complicating the emotional closure for victims’ families.

As investigations continue, the case remains a sobering example of the long-term impact of violent crimes and the ongoing need to protect vulnerable individuals.
