Leyton Hernandez, Texas Community Mourns Veterans Memorial Teacher and Coach After Fatal Crash

The community of Corpus Christi is mourning the sudden loss of Leyton Hernandez, a respected educator and athletic coach who died Friday after a two-vehicle crash outside the Coastal Bend region.

Hernandez, 28, served as a teacher and multi-sport coach at Veterans Memorial High School, where he spent the past five years mentoring students and athletes. School leaders say his dedication to young people made him a valued member of the campus community.

He was the son of Roland Hernandez, the superintendent of Corpus Christi Independent School District. District officials confirmed the loss in a statement and announced that counseling services will be available for students and staff when classes resume.

A graduate of King High School, Hernandez later attended Texas State University, earning his bachelor’s degree in 2020. During his time there, he was involved in campus life as a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and remained passionate about athletics, having once been recruited for college football.

Family members described a close bond between Hernandez and his father, noting their shared tradition of attending the state football championship together for nine consecutive years.

In a message shared by the school district, the Hernandez family thanked the community for its support as they begin to cope with the loss. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but tributes from students, colleagues, and friends continue to highlight Hernandez’s lasting influence as a mentor and role model.
