Katherine Hartley Short, Social Worker and Daughter of Martin Short, Dies at 42

Katherine Hartley Short, a Los Angeles–based social worker and the eldest daughter of comedian Martin Short, has died at age 42, according to reports confirmed by family representatives.

Authorities responded Monday evening to her Hollywood Hills home, where she was found deceased. The Short family issued a statement expressing “profound grief” and requesting privacy as they mourn the loss.

“Katherine was beloved by all and will be remembered for the light and joy she brought into the world,” the family shared.

Though connected to one of comedy’s most recognizable figures, Katherine Short largely maintained a private life focused on service. She earned her undergraduate degree from New York University and later completed a master’s in social work at the University of Southern California. She went on to work in Los Angeles supporting individuals and families in need.

Short was also involved with Bring Change To Mind, a nonprofit dedicated to reducing stigma surrounding mental health conditions. Colleagues say her professional path reflected a strong commitment to advocacy and community care.

She was born to Martin Short and his late wife, Nancy Dolman, who died in 2010 after battling ovarian cancer. Katherine was the couple’s eldest of three children.

The news comes during a difficult stretch for the elder Short, who recently paid tribute to longtime collaborator Catherine O’Hara in public remarks earlier this year.

Mental health professionals note that stories like Katherine Short’s highlight the ongoing importance of accessible support systems and open conversations about emotional wellbeing.

The family has not yet announced details regarding memorial services.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, consider contacting local mental health or emergency support services for immediate help.
