Shade 45 DJ Lord Sear Dies at 54

The hip-hop community is mourning the passing of Lord Sear, who died at the age of 54. Shade 45 confirmed his death on March 11, though the cause has not yet been released. Known off-air as Steve Watson, and also by the moniker Stak Cheda, Sear had been a fixture in hip-hop radio for more than two decades.

In a statement, Shade 45 described him as “more than a voice on the radio — he was a force, a friend, and family to so many of us,” announcing a tribute broadcast Thursday from noon to 4 p.m. ET on SiriusXM. Fans and artists, including Fat Joe, E-40, and Hit-Boy, shared heartfelt messages online, celebrating his influence and contributions.

Sear began his career with the hip-hop group Kurious and gained prominence on the Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Show in the 1990s. He toured internationally on Eminem’s Anger Management Tour, contributed voice work to Grand Theft Auto III, and appeared on Big Pun’s 2000 Yeeeah Baby album. At Shade 45, he co-hosted the All Out Show with Rude Jude and later hosted The Lord Sear Special.

Remembered for his humor, storytelling, and deep knowledge of rap and R&B, Sear left a lasting mark on hip-hop culture. The upcoming Shade 45 tribute aims to celebrate his life, honoring a DJ whose voice and personality shaped a generation of listeners and artists alike.
